Countertops for home or business

Countertops come in over thousands of colours, patterns, and finishes including marble, slate, concrete, wood block, and even metal!

Laminate

1000+ colours and styles

Laminate countertops are a base of dense layers of particleboard or wood product with a top, veneer layer of patterned polymers.

Laminates can take on almost any appearance − stone, wood, bamboo, tile, metal − because manufacturers can insert any pattern into the veneer layer.

The edge of laminate countertops can be shaped to any of our profiles (PDF).

Laminate LayersFor example, Formica’s 180FX series uses photographs of real stone and other natural materials. Brands such as Arborite, Decotone, Lamitech, Nevamar, Pionite, and Wilsonart also vary the surface of the protective layer to create different finishes−matte, gloss, and others.

Laminate countertops are typically 25½ inches deep for kitchens, and 23 inches deep for bathrooms (including backsplash). Industry standard for the base layer of laminate countertops is 5/8 of an inch thick, but we sell thicker boards (11/16 of an inch) for extra durability. They are available in 8, 10, 12-foot and custom lengths.

Environmentally-minded manufacturers such as Postform Ltd. create eco-friendly countertop that include post-consumer wood or paper; non-toxic resins, plastics, and adhesives; and production remnants.

Laminate countertops rate high for resisting stains, impact, and heat. They are nonporous and rate well for water and abrasion resistance, and ease-of-installation.

Granite

Natural stone

Granite countertops are slabs of dense, quarried stone. Mineral crystals in the stone such as mica and feldspar create granite’s speckled patterns and colour. Each granite countertop is unique, so store samples may vary from cut slabs.

Granite slabs can vary in size and thickness. You can leave the counter edge rough and unfinished, or shape it to bevel, radius, half-radius, square, and ogee profiles.

Granite countertops rate high for resisting stains, impact, abrasion, and heat. Granite is porous, so periodic sealing protects the stone against moisture absorption.

Quartz

Engineered stone

Quartz countertops are manufactured slabs of dense acrylic filled and patterned by crushed, natural stone—usually quartz. Patterns can look very similar to granite and marble, but with more consistent colour and patterning. They can also look very unique. Manufacturers make quartz countertops in hundreds of patterns and colours by varying their recipe.

Brands such as Hanstone, Caesarstone, Silestone, and Dupont Zodiaq offer variations in the type of stone (for example, quartz), the ratio of stone to filler (for example, 95 percent stone), the type of acrylic filler (for example, polyester), and the uniformity of the stone pattern. Some manufacturers create eco-friendly quartz with non-quarried rock or stone and by using non-toxic acrylics.

Solid Surface

Modern beauty

Solid surface countertops are patterned by finely crushed stone, sand, glass, and other minerals and bound by dense acrylic filler. Solid surface can look very similar to concrete, granite, and quartz, but at a lower cost. Like concrete, solid surface can also be shaped into a seamless-appearing countertop that can integrate a backsplash, edging, and other surfaces (such as a wood cutting area).

Solid surface countertops are available in a huge range of patterns and colours because each manufacturer selects the size and colour of the filler, as well as the tint and properties of the binding acrylic.

Brands such as Corian, Staron, Meganite may vary the surface (for example, matte, satin, or gloss), the type of acrylic (for example, polyester), and the type of filler and the colour of the acrylic. Some manufacturers create eco-friendly solid surface countertops with non-toxic acrylics.

Solid surface countertop can be any width and length, and is typically a 1/2 inch thick.

Solid surface countertops rate high for resisting stains, impact, and heat. Solid surface is nonporous, and burns and scratches can be buffed away by certified installers. In order to offer a 10-year guarantee, certified installers must install solid surface countertops.
